Why Oracle Apex?
Oracle Application Express (APEX) is Oracle’s primary tool for Database and web application development. APEX is a free to use development environment to build web based applications using SQL and PL/SQL. Explorer has been using APEX since 2004 to develop professional business applications for desktops and mobile devices. APEX adoption has exploded over recent years and is now considered by Oracle themselves to be fundamental to their own application development requirements for internal and external web based systems. "Oracle Application Express will allow you to build any data-driven web application with less effort as compared to traditional programming languages. The added Interactive Grid component in APEX 20.1 will extend the capabilities of Application Express, thereby covering even the most complex requirements for dialogs out-of-the-box. I therefore foresee a great uptake of customers that will migrate their legacy apps to Application Express" said Niels de Bruijn, Business Unit Manager and Oracle Ace Director, MT AG, Germany..."
Whether it is speed of delivery or complete control and precision that is required, APEX caters for all. First and foremost the integrated development environment (IDE) is very intuitive, which makes the introduction and adoption of APEX, irrespective of whether the user is an experience developer or a data user, an easy transition.
APEX provides a development environment for professional developers but also accommodates data users who need to rapidly build and represent data by using intuitive wizards. With minimal coding, a data user can build and distribute data forms, reports and charts and a more experienced developer can, without limitations, deliver enterprise class solutions using a very productive page designer interface.
Because Application Express is so tightly integrated with the Database, the complexity of the application framework, including session management and security, are handled automatically allowing the developer or data user to focus on delivering application functionality, which drastically reduces the development lifecycle and lowers cost.
APEX should be adopted by businesses that recognise the value of keeping costs down and simplifying technical solutions to deliver business requirements. Simply put, by using APEX you can develop complex systems at up to 1/4 of the time it takes for an equivalent Java deployment – with no loss in functionality. It’s stable, it scales and it’s secure. Oracle Application Express (APEX) should also be the preferred development tool for any Oracle developer with PL/SQL experience as it allows them to develop modern Web 2.0 applications by leveraging their existing development expertise. APEX applications are as good as you develop them and Explorer is renowned for our ability to develop enterprise class applications with APEX. We have been at the forefront of APEX development since 2004 and endorsed by the very people at Oracle who created Application Express and continue to manage the product today.
Learning about Apex Architecture
Oracle APEX 20.1 is fully supported through Oracle Support Services on all Editions (EE, SE2, SE, and SE1) of the Oracle database, 188.8.131.52 or higher with a valid Oracle Database Technical Support agreement.
APEX is effectively a 2-Tier architecture where the client (a simple Web browser) talks through to the APEX Engine which resides in the Oracle DB
Given the fact it resides in the Oracle Db it can be installed into any edition and any version of the Oracle DB 9iR2 and above SE, SE1, or EE and Oracle XE.
The APEX Engine serves HTML pages and processes page submissions based on the meta data stored in tables within the DB
Communication between the browser and database can be configured using the APEX Listener (Soon to be released), Embedded PL/SQL Gateway (EPG) which is part of the DB, or Apache and mod_plsql.
When a URL (page request) is sent from a user a pooled Database session is used to fetch the meta data relating to the page and then render the HTML after passing the authentication and authorization checks. Similarly, when a page is posted a pooled Database session is used to fetch the meta data relating to the validations, computations, processes, etc that are to be performed. Once they have been completed, the resulting page including processing information (e.g. success / error messages) is posted. APEX doesn’t consume any Database resources (e.g. maintaining a connection for each user) except when processing a page.
The overhead of APEX page processing (e.g. reading the meta data, testing authentication / authorization, rendering, etc.) is normally measured in sub milli-seconds with the majority of the time to render a page on the user’s computer being consumed by the actual Database calls (e.g. SELECT * FROM …, INSERT INTO …), network latency, and speed with which their computer renders the HTML within their browser.
Oracle Application Express enables a single database to host large numbers of users. Users work in a dedicated work area called a workspace. A workspace is a virtual private database that enables multiple users to work within the same Oracle Application Express installation while keeping their objects, data and applications private. This flexible architecture enables a single database instance to manage thousands of applications. It turns a single database into a hosted service, making it an ideal platform for consolidation of smaller data stores.

Oracle Application Express 20.1 is a great leap forward in end user productivity and introduces powerful new declarative features, enabling you to develop, design and deploy beautiful, responsive, database-driven desktop and mobile applications using only a browser. The Oracle APEX Engine has been overhauled with the release of APEX 5,x. Extensive work was put into optimizing the code and as a result, you can get a boost in speed when running an application on APEX 5,x versus older APEX versions.
Joel Kallman, Director of Software Development for Oracle Application Express, states that:
“We did measure over the 5,x development cycle various attributes about the APEX engine, and there is reduced CPU usage, reduced Session Logical Reads, reduced execute count for SQL & PL/SQL, reduced parse count of SQL & PL/SQL, and reduced redo size. In some cases, it was a 50% reduction for execution of the same APEX application.”
